At East Lake you will see B ald eagle and O sprey that nest nearby. The lake lures C ommon loon , at least three species of grebe (H orned, Eared, and W estern ), T undra swan , Eurasian wigeon , American wigeon , R ing-necked duck , two kinds of goldeneye ( Common and Barrow’s ), and Hooded mergenser . Ring-billed gull , California gull , C aspian tern , and B elted kingfisher have also been seen. Scan the shoreline for S ora , American avocet , and S potted sandpiper . Drive or hike to the summit of Paulina Peak to watch soaring raptors such as G olden eagle , T urkey vulture , P rairie falcon , and R ed-tailed hawk .
Help your child experience the magic of Christmas with a special visit and program by St. Nicolas at the Shrine on December 2 nd . St. Nicolas will give a talk about his life and the traditions surrounding his name beginning at 2pm. Children will leave their shoes outside the chapel doors, only to find them filled with goodies after the presentation. The afternoon will also include some crafts and activities and of course photo ops with St. Nicholas. The cost is $5 per child and reservations must be made by November 29 th by calling 419-925-4532.
